The Walnut Club is honored to participate once again in the Annual Sojourner Truth Walk: Celebrating Girls' & Women’s Leadership.

We invite you to join The Walnut Club team and help us raise money to support Philly girls and families.
This year's walk celebrates women, girls, and teachers of all kinds, whose work and leadership have been essential this year.

Attendees can participate either virtually or in-person at Bartram’s Garden, 5400 Lindbergh Ave., on Sunday, May 23, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

This will be a fun and lively event!
We encourage you to make a sign for The Walnut Club, listing who inspires you, and hold it up for all to see during the walk or on the video call. (Take a photo, post it to social media, and tag #SoJoWalk2021 and @thewalnutclub too!) For those attending in person, art supplies will be provided for creating your sign.

Here’s how to participate in the Sojourner Truth Virtual Walk:
1) Click HERE to register for the event on our walk website.
Registration costs $25/person. There is also a free registration option.
You have to be registered in order to receive the Zoom information.

2) Select the option to "Join My Team" or "Sponsor My Team" to help us raise money to support Philly girls and families during this time.

3) Join us in-person or through the live Zoom event on May 23, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. The event will include a roll call of teams. Be sure to give a cheer when you hear The Walnut Club team name!

Funds raised through this event are used to provide scholarships for girls to go to Camp Sojourner, GirlsLeadershipCamp.org, a nonprofit program for Philadelphia girls that focuses on team-building, leadership development, creative arts, and appreciation of nature.

Camp Sojourner's mission is to help girls become leaders, who take charge of their own lives and also act as agents of positive change in their communities. We embrace this mission because The Walnut Club is also dedicated to promoting the advancement of women and celebrating their achievements. We believe in the power of “women helping women,” as we champion each other to grow into our highest potential.

It costs $1,200 for one girl to attend this week-long overnight summer camp. Not every family can afford tuition so Camp Sojourner charges families on a sliding scale and they pay what they can afford. With your support, some families will pay almost nothing.

This fundraiser will also help support year-round leadership activities, including online programming efforts, which are free for girls and families.

All participants are encouraged to participate this year in honor of a teacher they admire. If you attend the event in person, blank signs will be available for you to write their name and/or attach a photograph. If you attend virtually, you will be encouraged to hold up a sign at home during the event, celebrating the teacher you have chosen to honor.

This past year, we have asked so much of our teachers, adapting to changing conditions and helping students adapt too, often with little notice and few resources. Parents/guardians forced to help students at home have also been teachers this year, and hopefully we all recognize now the hard work of skilled, caring adults supporting young people in their growth and learning, and the need for fair systems and resources for all young people and teachers. Sojourner Truth Walk participants can choose to define "teacher" however they choose in selecting an honoree, and can choose someone from their past or present. But we want to honor the hard work, dedication, and leadership of teachers in their many roles.

We know this is a difficult time for a lot of people, and we hope you will consider supporting our team with fundraising efforts to champion this special opportunity for Philly girls.

Even if you are unable to help fundraise or make a donation at this time, we hope you will still join us virtually on May 23rd.

This event is open to all. Questions about this event can be sent to marketing@walnutclub.org.
